The basics

What is a donor-advised fund (DAF)?

It’s an investment account where the proceeds can only be used to donate to nonprofits.

You take the tax deduction the year you add cash or appreciated stock. You can then grant out the money over time. Grant it all this year. Or all over 10 years. Or never (please don’t do that – abandoned DAFs are a big problem).

We wanted to open ClimateDAF because for some, the idea of donating to climate causes from funds that are invested in fossil fuel companies was a blatant contradiction.

Can I move a DAF I already have?

Yes. You can grant the funds in one DAF to another one.

Most sponsors, including Fidelity Charitable, Schwab Charitable and Vanguard Charitable, allow DAF-to-DAF grants. During our onboarding flow, you can either have us hop on a call with you to do it together or send instructions based on where your current DAF is located.

What does it cost?

Admin fees similar to the biggest DAF sponsors.

Our fund fees are higher than plain index funds, but lower than the climate pools at Fidelity Charitable and Vanguard Charitable. See the Pricing page for the exact numbers at any balance.

Do I have to give to climate causes?

No. Grant to any eligible 501(c)(3).

Your school, your food bank, your church, a climate group. The only shared commitment is the 1% that goes to the ClimateNOW Prize pool, but you can give to any other 501(c)(3) just like a regular DAF.

What is the 1% commitment?

Each year, at least 1% of your DAF balance goes to the shared prize pool.

Pooled together, members fund one shovel-ready climate project a year and each get one vote on which one. You can contribute more for more votes.

Who is Carbon Collective?

We manage $445M in regulatory assets under managementAs of September 30, 2026 we had $449,881,274 in regulatory assets under management from individual investors, employer 401(k) and 403(b) plans, and our ETFs and CITs, based on internal records and calculated using the Form ADV method. This method counts both our funds and client accounts that hold them, so some assets are counted twice. Rounded down for simplicity. for 950 clients and retirement plans (as of Sep 30, 2026), and we build and manage the ClimateDAF portfolios.

Your account

Who holds my money?

Altruist is the custodian.

Altruist holds the assets, executes trades, and sends statements, and Carbon Collective manages the investments. Custody is provided by Altruist Financial LLC, a member of FINRA and SIPC. Vanguard, an Altruist investor since 2020, agreed to acquire the company in August 2026. Endaoment is a nonprofit organization that enables online brokerage firms like Altruist to offer DAFs to people like you.

Who is Endaoment?

The 501(c)(3) public charity that sponsors every ClimateDAF.

Like every DAF, your contribution is an irrevocable gift to the sponsor, which is why it’s deductible. You keep advisory privileges over investments and grants. Endaoment has helped DAFs grant out over $180 million to charities as of Sep 30, 2026.

Is there a minimum?

No account minimum.

What can I contribute?

Cash, stocks, ETFs, and mutual funds.

Is my gift tax-deductible?

Contributions to a DAF are generally deductible in the year you make them, within IRS limits.

Your situation is your own, so check with your tax adviser.

How do I make a grant, and how long does it take?

Pick a charity in your account and request a grant.

Endaoment has over 1.8 million 501(c)(3)s already in its system. If your charity is not there, you can request it to be added. The money is sent within 1–2 business days after you submit.

Can I give anonymously?

Yes. You choose what the charity sees.

You can share your name, or send the grant from your fund without it.

Can I change my portfolio later?

Yes, anytime.

Switch between the three portfolio options whenever your plans change. Because the money is already in a charitable account, switching doesn’t create a tax bill.

Can I give to charities outside the US?

Yes, to some.

Endaoment has a partnership with GlobalGiving, which enables US donors to make grants to select international nonprofits.

What happens to my DAF if I die?

You choose who takes over.

You can name successor advisors, like a spouse or your kids, to keep granting, or name charities to receive what’s left. If you leave instructions in your will, your executor can also tell us what should happen next.

The ClimateNOW Prize

What kinds of projects can apply?

Specific projects with a clear before and after.

Plugging an abandoned oil well is the model: a defined job, a finish line, and a result we can measure and film. No general operating support, advocacy, or early-stage research. Just clear problems that we collectively solved, for good.

Who decides which projects make the ballot?

Terraset vets every applicant.

Terraset and Carbon Collective will put out a call for applications every year. Any project from around the world is welcome to apply. Terraset then checks that the project is real, ready to start, and won’t happen without this funding. We all vote on the projects that Terraset has vetted.

How does voting work?

One vote for every 1% of your DAF you commit that year.

The minimum is 1%, so every member gets at least one vote. Commit 5%, and you get 5 votes. Votes follow the percentage, not the dollars.

When is the first prize awarded?

Our goal is to award the first ClimateNOW Prize in April 2027.

Our goal is to open voting in the winter and have the winner selected by the spring.

How is the 1% calculated, and when is it taken?

It’s calculated and withdrawn when the award is announced.

Is the 1% an extra tax deduction?

No. You already took the deduction when you added the money to your DAF.

The 1% is a grant from your DAF like any other, so it doesn’t create a new deduction.

Does anyone take a cut of the prize pool?

A small portion.

We reserve a small portion of the prize pool for creating a video about the project. Terraset may also keep a nominal portion of the prize pool to fund its vetting of the applicants.

How will I know the project actually happened?

Every winning project is filmed before and after.

Terraset follows up on the grant, and we share the film and results with every member.

What if I skip the 1% one year?

You won’t lose your account, but we ask every member to commit.

We strongly believe that collective giving is part of what makes ClimateDAF special. We require a commitment to sign up. But if you change your mind, we may be disappointed, but we won’t kick you out.

Who is Terraset?

A climate nonprofit that evaluates and funds climate impact projects.

Terraset has funded 30 projects that removed or avoided 23,000 tons of CO₂e as of Sep 30, 2026. It vets every ClimateNOW Prize applicant and makes the grant to the winning project.
